What Travel Vaccines Do I Need as a Canadian Traveler?

Traveling is life’s greatest joys! However, exploring the world can sometimes expose you to health risks, especially in regions where certain diseases are more prevalent. As a Canadian traveler, understanding what travel vaccines you need is essential to staying safe and healthy abroad.

Why Do I Need Travel Vaccines?

Well, we all know that Travel vaccines protect against diseases that may not be common in Canada but are prevalent in other parts of the world. They help your body build immunity and minimize the risk of contracting serious illnesses like yellow fever, typhoid, or hepatitis A.

How to Determine Which Vaccines You Need for your next trip?

The vaccines you need depend on several factors, including:

Your Destination
Different regions have different health risks. For example, Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa may require vaccines not needed for trips to Europe or Australia.

The Length of Your Stay
Long-term travel may increase your risk of exposure to certain diseases compared to short-term visits. Exemple: for the Japanese encephalitis in Sri Lanka and some parts of India, they say you are not at risk if you stay less than a month in the destination.

Your Activities
If you’re venturing into rural areas, trekking through jungles, or eating street food, your risk for diseases like typhoid or Japanese encephalitis increases.

Your Health Status
Pre-existing health conditions may require additional precautions.

Common Travel Vaccines for Canadians

Here are some commonly recommended travel vaccines:

1.
Consult a Travel Health Clinic
Visit a travel health clinic at least 4-6 weeks before departure. This allows enough time for vaccines to take effect.

Bring Your Vaccination Records
Keep your immunization records handy to avoid unnecessary vaccinations.

Get Vaccinated
Some vaccines may require multiple doses over a few weeks. Plan ahead to complete the series before your trip.

Tips for Staying Healthy While Traveling

Carry Travel Essentials: Include insect repellent, hand sanitizer, and a first aid kit.

Follow Travel Warnings: Stay informed about disease outbreaks at your destination.

Practice Food Safety: Avoid uncooked foods and drink bottled or boiled water in high-risk areas.

As a Canadian traveler, preparing for your trip involves more than just packing your travel outfits and your bikini. Ensuring you’re up to date on necessary travel vaccines is a critical step in safeguarding your health. By researching your destination and consulting with a healthcare provider, you can enjoy your adventures worry-free.

Safe travels!

Those are 2 questions that we frequently have In the travelling world. In today’s digital age, it’s easy to assume that booking a trip online is the most cost-effective and convenient option. With endless websites and apps offering deals, many travelers are tempted to bypass travel agents altogether. Although, you never know if you have the best price for your trip! However, there are still valid reasons why people turn to travel agents for their vacation planning. But are travel agents worth it in the modern era, and how do they make money?

The Value of a Travel Agent

First, let’s consider why someone might choose to work with a travel agent rather than plan everything independently. We all know that all the information needed to book a trip is out there. Will the agent be able to help me book my hybrid backpacking trip with hostels and/or Airbnb?

Expertise and Knowledge
One of the biggest advantages of using a travel agent is their expertise. Travel agents are well-versed in destinations, resorts, airlines, and even niche tours. They often have firsthand experience and insider knowledge, which means they can offer personalized recommendations that go beyond what you’ll find online. If you’re traveling to an unfamiliar destination or need help with a complex itinerary, a travel agent can provide invaluable guidance.

Time-Saving
Planning a trip, especially one involving multiple destinations, hotels, or flights, can be overwhelming. A travel agent can save you hours of research and coordination. They take care of all the logistics, from booking flights to reserving accommodations, leaving you to simply enjoy the idea of your trip without the stress.

Exclusive Deals and Perks
While it’s easy to assume that booking online always offers the best deal, travel agents have access to special rates and perks not always available to the general public. They may have partnerships with hotels, airlines, and cruise lines, offering discounted rates, upgrades, or added amenities like early check-ins, complimentary breakfasts, or priority boarding.

Stress-Free Experience
Having a travel agent means you have someone to turn to in case something goes wrong during your trip. Whether it’s a flight delay, a booking error, or an emergency, having an expert on your side who can manage unexpected issues can provide peace of mind.

Tailored Itineraries
A travel agent can create an itinerary specifically suited to your preferences, whether you want a relaxing beach holiday, an adventure-packed road trip, or a luxury cruise. They can ensure your trip aligns with your budget, interests, and desired experiences, which can be hard to achieve when booking on your own.

How Do Travel Agents Make Money?

Now, you might wonder how travel agents make money if they’re offering so many benefits for you. Traditionally, travel agents earned a commission on bookings made through them. While this is still a significant revenue stream, the landscape has evolved.

Commissions from Suppliers
Travel agents typically earn a commission from airlines, cruise lines, hotels, and tour operators for bookings made through them. This commission can range from a few percent to as much as 20% or more, depending on the supplier. For example, cruise lines often pay higher commissions than booking a hotel room.

Service Fees
Many travel agents charge a service fee for their time and expertise. These fees can be flat-rate charges for certain services or hourly fees for complex itineraries. This helps agents cover their costs for time spent researching, customizing travel plans, and managing bookings.

Markups on Travel Packages
Some travel agents bundle services like flights, hotels, and excursions into packages, adding a markup to these bundled offerings. This allows them to make a profit while still offering competitive pricing compared to booking separately.

Referral Fees and Partnerships
Travel agents may also receive referral fees for recommending certain services, activities, or insurance to clients. For example, if you book a tour or travel insurance through your agent, they might receive a commission for making the recommendation.

Affiliation Programs
Many travel agents work with larger agencies or networks that provide additional support, resources, and promotional tools. These networks often provide agents with a cut of sales or access to exclusive offers, further boosting their income.

So, are travel agents worth it? For many travelers, the answer is yes. Travel agents offer a level of expertise, convenience, and personalized service that can enhance your travel experience. Whether you’re planning a special vacation, booking complex multi-destination trips, or simply want expert advice, a travel agent can save you time and stress, and potentially offer access to exclusive deals.

As for how they make money, travel agents rely on commissions, service fees, and partnerships with suppliers to generate income. Their value lies not only in the ability to secure deals but in the time, stress, and hassle they save their clients. In short, while booking online is a convenient option, working with a travel agent may be the smart choice for those seeking a smoother, more customized.

But with so many options available, how do you decide which travel credit card is the best for your needs?

The Maldives, a tropical heaven in the heart of the Indian Ocean, is renowned for its pristine white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and vibrant coral reefs. This archipelago of 26 atolls is a dream destination for travelers all around the world. Cam and I had the chance to spend 2 fantastic weeks in the Maldives before coming back home from our 14 months trip. Before you embark on your journey to this paradise on Earth, here are 10 things you should know from our own experience about traveling in the Maldives.

1. Local Island vs Resort Stay

While opulent resorts are the primary draw for many visitors, staying on a local island provides a more authentic experience. It allows you to interact with the friendly locals, explore the Maldivian culture, and witness daily life. Resorts are way more expensive than local islands, so that’s something to keep in mind if you travel on a budget.

2. Islamic Culture and Etiquette

The Maldives is an Islamic country, and it’s essential to be aware of and respect local customs and traditions. Dress modestly when outside resort areas, especially on local islands, and be mindful of prayer times. For women foreigners, it’s tolerated to wear shorts and t-shirt. Alcohol is only permitted on resort islands or on floating bar boats. The floating bar boats are boats in the ocean, reachable in less than 5 minutes by speedboat, where alcohol is permitted. It is not a good idea to try to bring alcohol from home in your luggages, since all the bags are screened on arrival and the alcohol is confiscated.

3. Bikini beaches. What?

In the Maldives, where Islamic customs and traditions are prevalent, there are designated areas known as “Bikini Beaches” where tourists can wear swimwear without offending local sensibilities. If you plan to explore local islands, it’s essential to be aware of and adhere to the local regulations regarding dress code. In many cases, wearing revealing swimwear outside designated areas on local islands is discouraged or even prohibited.

4. Snorkeling and Diving Paradise

Many islands in the Maldives have stunning house reefs just off their shores, providing easy access to snorkeling right from the beach. These reefs are teeming with colorful coral formations and diverse marine life. The Maldives offers excellent snorkeling conditions year-round. However, visibility is often best during the dry season (November to April), providing crystal-clear waters for optimal underwater exploration. Snorkelers can encounter colorful reef fish, sea turtles, rays, some species of sharks and various species of coral. Some sites are known for their large schools of fish, while others feature unique coral formations.

5. Budget Planning

A few tips to travel cheap in the Maldives For more information read our Article: How to travel to Maldives on a budget | 10 Tips

Bring the essentiel gear for your trip

It’s easy to overpack with items we think we might need, but let’s face it: we often reach for the same trusty gear and essentials. When heading to the Maldives, keeping your bag light and practical makes for a more carefree adventure. That’s why we’ve curated a selection of must-have travel essentials—each item designed to help you explore with ease and peace of mind, without the clutter. Check out our collection of top travel accessories and make sure you’re ready for the Maldives, stress-free.

Stay on Local Islands

While the Maldives is known for its private resort islands, staying on a local island can significantly cut down on costs. Local islands like Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, and Dhiffushi offer more affordable accommodations and the chance to experience authentic Maldivian culture. Not only are guesthouses and hotels on these islands cheaper, but you’ll also have access to local restaurants and shops, helping you save on food and other expenses. Plus, by staying on a local island, you’re contributing directly to the local economy, supporting small businesses and communities.

Local Transportation

Getting around the Maldives can be expensive if you rely solely on private transfers or seaplanes, but there are more budget-friendly options. Public ferries are the most economical way to travel between islands, though they can be slower and less frequent than speedboats. For shorter distances, shared speedboat transfers are a cost-effective alternative to private charters. Planning your itinerary around ferry schedules can help you save money, though it requires a bit of flexibility. Additionally, some local islands are close enough to each other that you can hop between them using affordable local boats, allowing you to explore more while sticking to your budget.

Opt for Guesthouses

Guesthouses on local islands are a budget traveler’s best friend in the Maldives. These accommodations are often family-run, offering a more personal experience compared to large resorts. Rooms are typically clean, comfortable, and equipped with basic amenities. Some guesthouses also offer meal plans, excursions, and activities at a fraction of the cost of what you’d pay at a resort. Staying in a guesthouse gives you the opportunity to interact with locals, gain insights into their way of life, and even get insider tips on the best spots to visit.

Eat Local

Dining at resorts can be pricey, with meals sometimes costing as much as a night’s stay at a guesthouse. On local islands, however, you can enjoy delicious, authentic Maldivian food at local cafes, known as “hotaa.” These small eateries serve up traditional dishes like fish curry, roshi (flatbread), and hedhikaa (local snacks) at very reasonable prices. By eating where the locals do, not only do you save money, but you also get a taste of the true Maldivian culinary experience. Plus, some guesthouses include breakfast in their rates, further helping you stretch your budget.

6. Best Time to Visit: Seasons Matter

The Maldives has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons: the dry season (November to April) and the wet season (May to October). The dry season is ideal for travelers looking for sun-soaked days, calm seas, and clear skies, but it’s also the most popular time, meaning higher prices and more tourists. The wet season, while featuring more rain, offers lower prices, fewer crowds, and still plenty of sunshine, making it a viable option for budget-conscious travelers.

7. What island to choose?

Well, If you want to live the rich life and book yourself a resort go for it! Now you just need to do some shopping to know which one fits your needs or budget. Can you surf in the Maldives?

Absolutely! The Maldives is a fantastic destination for surfing enthusiasts. The Maldives has two primary surf seasons, each offering different conditions:

North Male Atolls: Best from April to October during the southwest monsoon, offering consistent swells.

South Male Atolls: Ideal from February to October during the southwest monsoon, with the most reliable surf conditions.

Best Surf Spots:

North Male Atolls: Popular spots include Chicken’s, Jailbreaks, Pasta Point, and Coke’s.

How to get to the islands?

Start by booking an international flight to Velana International Airport (MLE) in the capital city of Malé. Many major airlines operate regular flights to the Maldives from various countries. Once you arrive at Velana International Airport, you’ll need to take additional transportation to reach your specific island destination. There is a small port right in front of the airport exit. You can choose between public ferry or private transportation which you can arrange with your hotel up front. If you plan to visit local islands rather than resorts, public ferries operate between many inhabited islands. These ferries are an affordable option (2-3 USD pp) but may have limited schedules, and the journey may take longer compared to speedboats or seaplanes. You can get the public ferry schedule online or with the help of your accommodation.

10.

Think you know all about travel? Think again!

Travel comes with plenty of assumptions, whether it’s about backpacking, all-inclusive resorts, or solo trips. From believing all backpackers are on a shoestring budget to thinking you need to speak the local language fluently to get by, travel myths can sometimes hold us back from exploring with an open mind. In this article, we’re busting 10 of the most common travel myths to help you see the world from a fresh perspective. Get ready to leave behind misconceptions and discover the realities of a more authentic and exciting travel experience!

Myth: Backpacking is only for young people.

Reality: No Way! Backpacking isn’t just for the young and reckless. It’s for the free-spirited, the curious, and the adventurous of all ages. Experience the thrill of travel on your own terms, carrying only what you need, and discovering hidden gems off the beaten path.

Myth: All-inclusive resorts are only for relaxation.

Reality: All-inclusive resorts offer a comprehensive vacation experience, catering to a wide range of interests. From adrenaline-pumping water sports like scuba diving and surfing to serene yoga and meditation sessions, there’s something for everyone. For history buffs, explore ancient ruins and cultural sites led by expert guides. Thrill-seekers can embark on exhilarating adventures like zip-lining through lush rainforests or white-water rafting down turbulent rivers. And for those seeking relaxation, unwind on pristine beaches, indulge in luxurious spa treatments, or simply soak up the sun by the pool.

Myth: You need to know the language to travel to a country.

Reality: While knowing a few basic phrases in the local language can certainly enhance your travel experience, it’s not a prerequisite for exploring the world. Many popular tourist destinations have English signage, menus, and staff who can communicate in English. Additionally, the rise of language translation apps has made it easier than ever to navigate foreign countries. From translating menus to asking for directions, these apps can be a lifesaver. So, don’t let language concerns hold you back from your next adventure!

Myth: Solo travel is lonely.

Reality: Contrary to popular belief, solo travel is far from lonely. In fact, it often leads to more meaningful connections with both locals and fellow travelers. Hostels provide a social environment where you can meet people from all over the world, sharing stories and experiences. Group tours offer opportunities to bond with like-minded individuals while exploring new destinations together. And by immersing yourself in local culture, you can interact with friendly locals and gain a deeper understanding of their way of life.

Myth: Travel agents are outdated.

Reality: Even though I am personally not a fan. Travel agents are more than just booking agents; they are experienced professionals who can curate unforgettable travel experiences. They offer a wealth of knowledge and expertise, helping you navigate complex itineraries, find exclusive deals, and provide personalized recommendations. Whether you’re planning a family vacation, a romantic getaway, or an adventure-filled expedition, a travel agent can streamline the process and ensure a seamless journey.

Myth: You can “do” a city in one day.

Reality: Of course you can, but you will most likely miss on a lot of stuff! Cities have layers of culture, history, and hidden gems. While you can see the highlights in a day, fully experiencing a city usually takes more time.

Myth: All-inclusive resorts are too expensive for budget travelers.

Reality: While all-inclusive resorts often conjure images of opulent luxury, the reality is that they can be surprisingly affordable, especially during off-peak seasons. By bundling accommodation, meals, and activities into one package, all-inclusive resorts can offer significant savings compared to booking individual components separately. This is particularly true for families or groups, as it eliminates the need to worry about budgeting for meals and entertainment.

Myth: Staying in hostels means sacrificing comfort.

Reality: Gone are the days of cramped dormitory-style accommodations and questionable cleanliness. Modern hostels have evolved to cater to a diverse range of travelers, offering a variety of room options, from shared dormitories to private rooms. Cam and I often rent Private rooms in Hostel so we have both of the best world: The friendly atmosphere with some privacy and comfort. The surf conditions vary between the two coasts due to the alternating wind patterns. Here are the surf seasons for East and West Sri Lanka:

East Coast (Arugam Bay):

The surf season on the east coast, particularly in Arugam Bay, is influenced by the Yala Monsoon.

Main Surf Season: May to September:

During this period, the Yala Monsoon brings consistent and powerful waves to the east coast, making it the primary surf season for Arugam Bay. Beginners and advanced surfers can find their perfect break. To rent a surfboard, it costs around 500-750 LKR (1-2USD) for 1 hour or 2000-3000 LKR (6-9USD) for the whole day. Some places offer rentals for 1 week or more.

Hikkaduwa (1 beach break & 2 reef breaks)

Hikkaduwa is the first stop, with waves suitable for all levels. Beginners can surf on the forgiving beach break in Hikkaduwa beach, while advanced surfers can challenge themselves at the more advanced reef breaks called “Main point”. It is located around 300m north from the beach break. Over 5-6 feet, that wave offers forgiving little barrels. The paddle-out can be tricky in some shallow part of the reef. Ask the locals about the location of the channel for a safe paddle in/out. There is an other wave in front of the restaurant Parrot’s paradise, 1 km north of Main point. It is a small and shallow point break for intermediate surfers. Beginners flock to Weligama to experience the thrill of catching their first waves with ease. The beachfront vibe is electric, with surf schools dotting the shoreline and a bustling community of surfers exchanging tips and tricks. For more experienced surfers you have Fisherman’s point at the very far end of the beach on the northern side. My personal favorite spot is “Jungle beach” 2km north of Weligama beach. There is a perfect left hand point break and a right hand reef break! You can’t see it from the road so it is unknowned (for now). It was so shallow that my leash got stuck in the reef at the bottom. At the same moment, a set came and broke right on me while I was stuck. For a few seconds I thought I would drown there since I couldn’t move and the waves were pushing me underwater. After a few seconds (it felt like ages), my leash snaped and I was free. The most expensive resort charge 15 000$ US/night for some luxury hut on the water. The cheapest resort we found was 200$ US/night which was still out of our budget.

Cam and I spent 10 days in the Maldives and as you know, we are definitely not rich. We managed to pay around 630USD each. That being said, traveling on a budget to the Maldives is certainly possible. You need careful planning and consideration of various cost-saving strategies. Here are some tips to help you plan a budget-friendly trip to the Maldives:

Cost per person overview for 10 days in USD:

Accommodations: 250$ (average of 50$/night for both of us, breakfast included)

However, be aware that this period also coincides with the wet season, so be prepared for occasional rain showers. We talked with a local who said that the weather is actually pretty good all year. This could be an option to considerably reduce the cost of your trip but that would not be my first option.

2. Stay on Local Islands:

Visit the local Island ! What does that means? Well, listen carefully because that is the most important point for a budget-friendly trip to the Maldives. Opt to stay on local inhabited islands rather than exclusive resort islands. This is where the Maldivian local population live. You will find plenty of beautiful guesthouses, budget accommodations, local restaurants and cute coffee shops. They are way more affordable than the resorts. Cam and I paid an average of 50$ USD/per night, breakfast included for some luxury rooms with A/C a few minutes away from the beach. Most Maldives resorts, except for a few, usually occupy one whole island.

Local islands allow you to immerse yourself in the Maldivian culture, interact with the friendly locals, and gain insights into their daily lives and traditions. It also provides easy access to a variety of local activities, such as island hopping, snorkeling, diving, and water sports. We heard that activities offered are a lot cheaper on a local island than the ones offered on the resorts because there’s usually just one company offering activities on every resorts vs many companies on local islands. You might not be in those fancy water bungalows but this is the same beauty, the same water color, the same wildlife for more than half the price. For me, that is a good trade!

The lovely streets of Thulusdhoo (local island)

3. Local Transportation:

Use public ferries (1-5$ USD) to move between islands. This is a cost-effective alternative to speedboats or seaplanes, which are commonly used for transfers to different islands. Speedboats are around 25$ USD one way, depending where you’re going. Keep an eye on the pubic ferry schedule because they do not operate on Friday and Monday. Try to move around any other days of the week to save money.

4. Budget Airlines:

Look for budget airlines that operate flights to the Maldives. Sometimes, you can find discounted rates on flights, especially if you book well in advance. The best time to book a flight would be on a Tuesday around 6 months in advance.

5. Guesthouses and Budget Accommodations:

Like we talked earlier, you should consider staying in guesthouses or budget accommodations on local islands. These options are more affordable than luxury resorts and still offer comfortable stays. It is also a good options to meet other travelers.

6. Eat Local:

Choose local restaurant and street food stalls for meals (Approx. 5 USD per person) . This is often more budget-friendly than dining at resort restaurants. Maldivian cuisine, including fish curry and local specialties, can be enjoyed at reasonable prices. The further you go from the touristy places the cheaper it is. Ask the locals, they’ll tell you where to go!

7. Snorkeling and Free Activities:

Enjoy the natural beauty of the Maldives without breaking the bank. Snorkeling is often free or comes at a minimal cost (10$ US for renting one kit for the day). The best thing would be to squeeze one in your bag from home! Many local islands have beautiful beaches and reefs where you can explore the underwater world from the shore. By the shore of Thulusdhoo, we saw black tip sharks, rays and lots of colorful fish.

Some islands offers beautiful and consistent surf. Especially Thulusdhoo (our favorite island) and Himmafushi. Renting a surfboard is just 15$ USD/per day. Full day activities like snorkeling with sharks and rays or diving cost around 70-100$ US per activity. Every singly one of them looks amazing, choose carefully which ones to do otherwise it’s gonna cost you a lot.

8. Local Experiences:

Participate in local experiences and activities. This might include island tours, cultural events, soccer games, volleyball games and interactions with the local community, providing an authentic experience at a lower cost.

9. Squeeze this destination in a central Asia trip

Just like we did! We were in India and Sri Lanka just before flying to Maldives. Those are cheap destinations to travel and are worth visiting. Once you are in this part of the world it is really accessible to book a flight to Male and travel to the magnificent Maldives. We booked our flight from Colombo (Sri Lanka) to Male 3 months in advance and it cost us 100USD each. For North-American like us, it is a long trip and an expensive flight to go to straight to Maldives, so better make the most of it and travel to another country before!

10. Split the price!

It is an easy thing to say but it is obvious that if you travel to the Maldives with a partner, you cut a lot of expenses in half. Like accommodations, most activities offers discount if you are more then 1 person participating, food, etc. Go find your travel buddy and plan your next trip to the paradise archipelago!

By combining these strategies and tailoring your trip to your budget, you can experience the beauty of the Maldives without overspending. Remember to research and plan thoroughly, and consider the trade-offs between cost and the experiences you wish to have during your stay.

According to me, trains are the most convenient way to move around. We were quite surprised how clean the trains are (except the toilets, bring your own toilet paper). In some trains, they clean the floors a few times during the journey. You should know that, when booking a train ticket in India, you have a few options:

First Class AC : private cabin of 2 to 4 beds that you can lock with air conditionner. This is the best option for long night ride. They provide you sheets, a warm blanket and a small pillow. The seats are assigned.

Second Class AC: No cabin, everyone is in the same area. There are 2 seats at the bottom and one bed on top. Or 2 bunk bed each side in sleeper trains. They provide you sheets and a small pillow. Also with air conditionner. The seats are assigned.

Third Class AC: No cabin, everyone in the same area (as second class AC), but 3 seats at the bottom and one bed on top. On sleeper trains, it is 3 bunk beds on top of each other. They provide you sheets. The seats are assigned.

General Class: unlimited spaces, no assigned seats. I would try to avoid this class because it can be very crowded and the chances that you can seat are very low. You can be standing with a lot of people for hours.

Just so you know, it is the same beds (same mattress and same bed comfort) from First Class AC to Third Class AC. Also, Indian railways employees sell food and drinks in the train. You can even get food delivered in the train from outside restaurants.

It can be hard as a foreigner to book train tickets online on the official website. Sometimes you get on waiting lists and your seats are not certain. You can create an account and give it a try on the Indian Railway website. It is a well known difficulty so a lot of hostels and hotels will help you book your trains for you!

Thats an exemple of Cam and I in a First Class AC private cabin on a 20h train ride!

BUS:

The other option for public transport in India is the bus. You can choose between sleeper bus, semi-sleeper bus or seater bus. All of them with AC or not, choose carefully! A good website to book bus tickets in India is Red Bus. The prices of the bus vary between 240 INR to 600 INR (3$ to 6$ USD) depending on the trip. We did Rishikesh to Delhi in a seater bus, booked on Redbus, and it was totally fine.

PRIVATE DRIVER:

One other good option of travelling around India is hiring a private driver. It is indeed a more expensive way to travel but it is the safest, easiest and fastest way to move around. You also have the latitude of stoping and visiting whatever you want. The driver is available 24/7 for any needs or emergency. We heard that most of the drivers expect you to give tips at the end of the journey (more than 50USD).

Your day to day trips in India | The thrilling three-wheeled experience

The famous TUKTUK, of course ! There is between 8 to 10 millions tuktuk driving around in India. You will even get tired of telling them NO when they offer you rides on every street corner. It is important that you bargain your prices before the ride otherwise you will have pricy surprises when you reach your destination. You should know that a lot of driver cannot read so have your Google Map ready in case they don’t know where you want to go. Sometimes, we had to make the driver rings our hotel so the they could tell him how to reach the hotel. I noticed that the electric tuk-tuk are normally cheaper than the gas one.

How not to be sick in India | So you can enjoy your butter chicken masala in peace

First things first, ensure that your routine vaccinations, such as measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis, are up-to-date. Consult with a healthcare professional to discuss and receive vaccinations specific to India, such as Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, Japanese encephalitis, and polio.

Drink only bottled or purified water. Avoid tap water, including ice cubes in drinks.

Be cautious with street food. Opt for freshly cooked, hot meals from reputable vendors.

Peel fruits and vegetables or choose those that can be cooked to reduce the risk of contamination.

Avoid western food. (They are not use to cooking it and keeping it fresh)

Wash your hands frequently (carry a hand sanitizer).

India often has stray animals, and some may carry diseases. Avoid direct contact with them, especially dogs and monkeys. Up to 1/3 of the stray dogs could carry rabies (they are everywhere)

Use insect repellent with DEET to protect against mosquitoes, which can transmit diseases like malaria and dengue fever.

Psst: I got the dengue in Varanasi and it was awful, i was in bed sleeping for 9 days with fever, headach, pain in the eyes and in all my body. So put that mosquitoes repellent on that skin ! Varanasi is actually an endemic region for japanese encephalitis and dengue.

TRIP PLANNER: 3 WEEKS ITINERARY IN INDIA

This itinerary is not a rush and fast travel journey, Cam and I generally like to spend at least 3 nights in every places we visit. Otherwise the transportation gets exhausting, especially in India where more of the cities are hours away from one another. You could spend less time in every city and cover more places, that’s up to you, but here is what we did:

1. FIRST STOP: Delhi – The chaotic world

The busy spice market in Old Delhi (Chandni Chowk)

We recommend you to land in Delhi international airport to start your trip. This is gonna be a shock, that is for sure. Your trip to India kicks off in the bustling metropolis where almost 33 millions people live. Begin by immersing yourself in the historical wonders of Old Delhi. Where narrow lanes lead to the imposing Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in India and the bustling Chandni Chowk which is the biggest spice market in Asia.

Delhi is India that you see in movies. It is over crowded, polluted and dirty. That is an experience itself, all the smells, the constant honks, the people everywhere, your personal space reduced to non, it is a meaningful adventure, all of your senses are stimulated. We never felt like we were in danger there but be sure you know where to go and where not to go. For me, two days was enough to visit Delhi and its attractions.

2.
