An iconic volcanic landscape

Mount Tarumae is a 1041m active andesitic stratovolcano with a lava dome. The whole hike takes approximately 2 hours, round trip, from the parking lot. Mount Tarumae can be climbed from spring to fall, free of charge. Be careful, for there is a risk of brown bear encounters.

When preparing to travel, lay out all of your clothes and all of your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money.

How to get there:

Seeing as Mount Tarumae is not accessible by public transport directly, you must first go to Lake Shikotsu Visitor Center. The number of buses going to Lake Shikotsu Visitor Center depends on the season, so it is highly advised to check bus schedules in advance. From there, you can take a taxi to get to Mount Tarumae. The easiest option is to rent a car or to hire a tour operator that will include transportation fees.
