The only active volcano in mainland Europe

The most-visited archaeological site in the world

The 1281 meters tall Mount Vesuvius is well known because of the eruption in A.D. 79 that destroyed the city of Pompeii. You can hike up the volcano and enjoy the view of the crater and the surrounding area. Round trip, it is a 4km trail and does not require prior hiking experience. Because of the volcanic ash, Pompeii is a well-preserved snapshot of life in a Roman city. The whole city was destroyed in about 25 hours, causing massive casualties for those who did not have enough time to escape the eruption. Both attractions are definitely worth a visit.

How to get there:

You can take a train to get to Pompeii from Rome (2 hours) or elsewhere. You can also book a day trip that includes a scenic drive along the Amalfi Coast. You may reach the top of Mount Vesuvius by car or with one of the many bus services from Herculaneum or Pompeii.
