A must-see in El Salvador

A wild destination

Montecristo is a popular national park, situated in the Montecristo cloud forest in Mesoamerica. It covers an area of 1973 hectares of hazy forest on the borders of three countries: Guatemala, Honduras and El Salavador. The park features plenty of hiking trails, camping huts, foggy forest and sublime views. The highlight of the park is definitely the dramatic trail to El Trifinio (closed from May to November). It takes on average 5 hours to hike this 7km trail, which is known to be quite difficult. For only $25 USD, you can hire a guide at the gates before heading to the trail. You should book your entrance ticket to Ministerio de Medio Ambiente in advance. If going to the park at a time where it isn't as busy, you can buy your entrance ticket or reserve a campsite directly at the gates.

How to get there:

The best option to get to Montecristo National Park is to hire a tour operator that includes transportation to your hostel. You can hire a private chauffeur from Metapán, which will cost approximately $80 USD for the round trip. You can also rent a car, but make sure it is 4WD. Make your way to Los Planes, which is where the trail begins.
