The heart of medieval Limerick City

King John's Castle is a medieval castle located in Limerick City, Ireland. It was built in the 13th century on the orders of King John, who was the King of England and Lord of Ireland at the time. The castle was built on the site of an earlier Viking settlement, and it was designed to defend the city and the River Shannon from attack. It was originally constructed as a simple motte-and-bailey fortification, but it was later expanded and strengthened with the addition of walls, towers, and other defensive features.
