One of the most underrated crater lakes

Stunning views of the Andes

The scenic Cuicocha Crater is situated at the foot of Cotacachi Volcano in the Reserva Ecologica Cotacachi. It is a spectacular reserve with beautiful landscapes and views of the lake and countryside. The trail that follows the crater rim starts by the information centre, and is easy to find. This hike will take you through some breathtaking views around the Cuicocha Crater, where you can get a great view of the Cotocachi Volcano in the background. The whole loop is 14 km long, and should take you about 3 to 5 hours to finish. Presently, there are no fees to enter the reserve.

the real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.

Located in the Cordillera Occidental of the Ecuadorian Andes.

How to get there:

From Quito, there are a few buses that reach Quiroga, which is the closest city to the Cuicocha Cracter. From there, take a taxi to the crater for approximately $5 USD. For the trip back home, there should be several taxis waiting by the lake.
