Known as the "opal capital of the world"

The town of Coober Pedy is renowned for its below-ground residences, called "dugouts". Most residents still live underground. If you want to experience living underground, there is an underground campsite (camp-underground.com.au) which costs AUS $16 per person. Visitors can are welcome to stay and install their tents in abandoned mines.

How to get there:

The easiest option to reach Coober Pedy Town is drive there yourself. The Ghan Expedition Train also makes scheduled stops at Coober Pedy, or you can even use one of the regional express-flights from Adelaide.
