An atmospheric shipwreck

The Johanna 1682

The Agulhas shipwreck refers to the remains of a Portuguese ship that was wrecked in 1503 off the coast of South Africa near Cape Agulhas. The ship was part of a fleet of 13 vessels that were sent by King Manuel I of Portugal to explore the waters of the Indian Ocean and establish trade routes with India. The site of the Agulhas shipwreck is protected by the South African government, and diving and excavation are strictly controlled to ensure the preservation of the site and its artifacts. The remains of the ship and its cargo are now considered to be an important cultural heritage site and a valuable resource for scholars and researchers studying the history of the Indian Ocean trade. Close by, there is also the Johanna (Joanna) was the first English East Indiaman to be wrecked on the South African coast.
