The only national park in the Free State

Famous for the beauty of its landscapes

Golden Gate Highlands National Park is a protected area located in the Free State Province of South Africa, near the border with Lesotho. The park covers an area of approximately 340 square kilometers and is known for its stunning scenery, particularly the golden-orange sandstone cliffs that surround it. The park is home to a wide range of wildlife, including eland, zebras, wildebeest, and several species of antelope. It is also an important area for birdwatching, with over 100 species of birds recorded in the park. One of the park's main attractions is the Brandwag Buttress, a prominent sandstone rock formation that towers over the surrounding landscape. The Buttress is particularly striking at sunrise and sunset, when the orange sandstone is illuminated by the sun. The park also offers a range of hiking trails, including the Rhebok Hiking Trail, which takes visitors through some of the park's most spectacular scenery. Other popular activities in the park include mountain biking, horse riding, and fly fishing.

How to get there:

It is possible to reach Golden Gate Highlands National Park by public transportation, but it can be a bit challenging as there is no direct public transportation to the park. The closest town to the park is Clarens, which is approximately 20 km away. You can take a bus or train from Johannesburg or Bloemfontein to Bethlehem, which is about 40 km from the park. From Bethlehem, you can take a taxi or arrange a shuttle service to Clarens, and then take another taxi to the park.

If you are coming from Johannesburg, the easiest way to get to the park is by car.
