The beautiful Lanquín Caves are a sacred site for the Mayan population. The caves are several kilometers long and contain many areas that remain unexplored. The cave system has numerous chambers and stalactite formations that can be visited. Though there is light in the caves, we recommend bringing a headlamp and some good shoes, for you will have to walk through wooden bridges, stairs, and rope ladders. The turquoise blue Lanquín river emerges from the mouth of the caves which makes for the perfect spot for a refreshing swim after visiting the caves. The entrance to the Semuc Champey National Par is only a short way up the road. It is an iconic natural monument worth visiting. You can explore the Lanquin Caves on your own or with a guide.
Lanquin Caves and Semuc Champey are situated 9 km outside of the small Mayan village of Lanquin. From Lanquin town, you can easily hire a shuttle or even walk to the caves. You can aslo hire one of the many tour operators that may include transportation services.

Quite a challenge to get there, but really worth the bumpy ride. Beautiful place, we had fun hiking and swimming. Be careful if you go on the cave expedition, not the safest thing I’ve done. Bring watershoes if you don’t want to get hurt!
