The largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Connected to the Mekong River, Tonle Sap Lake is a 120 km long freshwater lake. It is home to the Mekong giant catfish, one of the largest freshwater fishes in the world. Locals living by the lake must adapt to the constant flooding, which is why there are houses on stilts, a floating church, a floating basketball court and more. There is also a large crocodile farming industry on and around Tonle Sap. A few farms are even open to the public and it is worth visiting.

What you've done becomes the judge of what you're going to do — especially in other people’s minds. When you're traveling, you are what you are right there and then. People don't have your past to hold against you. No yesterdays on the road. – William least heat moon

Located in the lower Mekong Basin

How to get there:

The lake is located about 15 km south of Siem Reap. The best option to visit the lake is to hire a tour operator that will include the transportation from Siem Reap. You can also rent a tuk tuk or drive there yourself.
