Dunguaire Castle is a 16th-century tower house located on the shores of Galway Bay in County Galway, Ireland. The castle was built in 1520 by the O'Hynes clan, but was later purchased and renovated by Oliver St. John Gogarty, a well-known Irish surgeon, poet, and writer. The castle is known for its distinctive architecture, with a round tower and a rectangular block connected by a small courtyard. The exterior of the castle is decorated with intricate stonework, and the interior features oak paneling and a large stone fireplace. The castle is open to visitors and hosts a variety of cultural events, including medieval banquets and performances of traditional Irish music and dance.
The cheapest way to get to Dunguaires castle is by bus: Bus Eireann operates a regular service from Galway City to Kinvara. From the village, it’s a short walk to the castle.
By car: If you’re driving, take the N67 road from Galway City towards Kinvara. The castle is located just outside the town and is well signposted. There is a car park near the castle that you can use.
By boat: During the summer months, it’s possible to take a boat trip from Galway City to Kinvara, which passes by Dunguaire Castle. This can be a scenic way to approach the castle, but be sure to check schedules in advance.
