1634 meters tall mountain ridge

One of Norway's most famous mountain hikes

Besseggen is a mountain ridge located in Jotunheimen National Park in central Norway. It is a popular hiking destination, known for its stunning views of the surrounding landscape and its distinctive ridge trail that runs between the lakes of Gjende and Bessvatnet. The hike typically takes 6-8 hours to complete and covers a distance of approximately 13 kilometers. It involves a steep climb up to the highest point of the ridge, which reaches an elevation of 1,743 meters (5,718 feet) above sea level. Along the way, hikers are treated to spectacular views of the lakes and surrounding peaks. The best time to hike Besseggen is from late June to mid-September, when the weather is typically mild and the trail is free of snow. However, it is important to note that the weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, so hikers should always be prepared for sudden changes in conditions.

THE JOURNEY, NOT THE ARRIVAL, MATTERS

Located in Vågå Municipality in Innlandet county, Norway.

How to get there:

To get to Besseggen, you can take a bus or drive to the town of Gjendesheim, which is located near the southern end of Lake Gjende. Gjendesheim is approximately a 4-hour drive from Oslo or a 2.5-hour drive from Trondheim.

If you prefer to take public transportation, there are daily bus services from Oslo and other major cities in Norway to Gjendesheim during the summer months. The bus ride takes around 6-8 hours depending on the departure location.

Once you arrive at Gjendesheim, you can start the hike to Besseggen. The trailhead is well marked and the start of the trail is located a short walk from the Gjendesheim tourist center. You can also take a ferry across Lake Gjende to Memurubu, which is another starting point for the hike. It is important to note that during the summer months, the parking lot at Gjendesheim can fill up quickly, so it is recommended to arrive early in the morning or take the bus to avoid parking difficulties.
